Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the right to contest particular decisions made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
