Lifetime of Salary Insufficient for UK Workers to Enter Most Affluent 10%, Study Says

According to recent study, the median employee in the UK would have to work half a century of income to attain the wealth level of the most affluent 10% of the population.

Expanding Economic Disparity Over Time

The study reviewed wealth distribution data from the recent health crisis years and discovered that during the pre-financial crisis era, it would have taken 38 years' worth of typical employment income to join the richest segment of the wealth distribution.

A senior economist involved with the analysis stated: "Economic disparities in Britain are presently so substantial that a regular employee setting aside their entire income during their working years would still not be able to reach the top of the financial hierarchy."

Assessing the Economic Gap

The analysis found that the difference between the assets of the average person and an individual in the richest segment was one million pounds in the mid-2000s, but had expanded to £1.3m in actual value by recent times.

The researcher added: "These differences are especially alarming as wealth mobility in Britain is low – those who commence life affluent tend to remain affluent, and conversely applies."

Comparative Financial Divide

Although the financial disparity widening in specific figures, the share of complete net worth in the UK possessed by the most affluent homes – called "relative wealth inequality" – has been "largely unchanged since the eighties," as stated in the research.

During this period, overall assets in the UK increased dramatically from three times the yearly economic output, to nearly seven and a half times.

Contributors of Economic Disparity

So-called "unearned" increases, through growing real estate costs and adjustments to pension valuations, were the main drivers of the widening wealth gap over the past decade, per the study.

These increases generally flowed to senior citizens with real estate, the study demonstrates – worsening the age-based economic gap.

Intergenerational Economic Gaps

The median economic difference between thirty-somethings and people aged 60-64 increased over twofold in real terms, from 135 thousand pounds in pre-financial crisis, to 310 thousand pounds.

Geographic Differences

Furthermore, the study revealed pronounced regional variations, with the typical amount of net worth in recent years standing at 290 thousand pounds in south-east England, where real estate values have generally grown substantially, versus 110 thousand pounds in the northeastern region.

Health Crisis Years Impact

Amid the health crisis, when numerous employees were protected by the public-funded employment protection, and health crisis restrictions curtailed consumption options, the information reveals many households were capable of accumulating, increasing their wealth.

Wealthier families achieved superior outcomes, though. "The typical family in the poorest fifth saw their cash reserves rise by merely £80 over the pandemic period (from 2019 to 2022), roughly identical to the 24 months before COVID. In contrast, the typical family in the wealthiest fifth saw their available funds increase by £4,200," the study reveals.
