The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, targets the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
